I was ice fishing in a pond for walleye, smallmouth bass, catfish, and panfish in New York during winter (mid February, 2014). I was using fathead minnows and rosies with 4 lb test on two ice fishing rods (with small split shot) as well as shiners on tip ups with 10 lb power pro braid and fluorocarbon leaders. I was switching back and forth between using size 4 red aberdeen hooks and #8 treble hooks. I drilled all the holes with a hand auger and didn’t have a tent, flasher, or any other electronics to find the fish — I just experimented and tried to use my knowledge of the contours in the pond. I ended up catching a couple jumbo perch, some black crappie, and a few smallmouth bass mostly while minnow fishing with the ice rods before sunset.
